LA MANGA CLUB TO HOLD EUROPEAN TOUR Q SCHOOL

Updated: December 28, 2011, 14:53

The prestigious La Manga Club resort has returned to the European Tour roster for the first time in 22 years after it was announced the venue’s South Course will host the second stage of Qualifying School.

The five-star Spanish resort last held the final stages of Qualifying School in 1989, having previously held the Spanish Open from 1973-77, and will once again welcome the Tour from December 2-5.

A host of up-and-coming talent hoping to earn a place alongside the continent’s finest golfers will have their first taste of playing in the upper echelons of professional golf on the very same fairways where Seve Ballesteros made his European Tour debut in 1974.

The latest news confirms La Manga Club’s return to prominence as a venue for major golfing events. As well as the men’s qualifying school during December the resort will also welcome the final stages of the Ladies European Tour equivalent in January, while it is also a leading contender to host the 2015 Solheim Cup.

Pedro Batista, director of golf at La Manga Club, said: “We are both delighted and also very proud to welcome The European Tour back to La Manga Club after a gap of many years. The Qualifying School is the starting point for the coming year’s Tour and so a very important event for anyone who enters.

“The South Course here at La Manga Club is an emblematic course which has welcomed many of the world’s finest golfers over its 40-year history and is in superb condition for an event of this nature. We very much look forward to welcoming the Qualifying School participants and we hope that our relationship with The European Tour will continue to flourish.”

La Manga Club has a strong golfing pedigree having hosted numerous prestigious events, while Gary Player was the five-star resort’s first director of golf and Ballesteros went on to become its touring professional.

The resort boasts unrivalled facilities as a sport and leisure venue including three 18-hole championship golf courses, a 28-court tennis centre and a 2,000sqm spa complex. It also offers the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses, more than 20 bars and restaurants and great entertainment for children.
